I cut the European dates off of the list below. I know Iceland is cold and all but is that any reason to book a tour that more or less straddles the 5440 line?

Atlas Sound & Broadcast

A few years ago, Deerhunter were scheduled to play at the Record Bar. For some reason, almost the day of, it was moved over to the Grand Emporium to be replaced by a hiphop show - Busdriver maybe? I don't remember exactly.

Not sure if that's a good enough reason to take it out on the Chiefs Kingdom though.

The Twilight Sad

This is one of the best bands of the past few years in my opinion. Their FatCat debut was incredible and the releases since then show they've got the talent and ability to last. Morose music backing a thick Scottish brogue going on about generally disturbing subjects - great stuff.

It's only what, a 10-hour drive to Morrison, CO? 15 hours to Chicago right?

Nelsonville, OH? The town has less than 6,000 people. But they do have an Opera House, apparently. According to Wikipedia, a bypass is being planned for the town.

Mt Eerie

A guy I know tried to make this happen a couple of years ago, but Elverum wasn't able to schedule KC in. Granted that the guy tours almost nonstop year-round, it'd be nice for him to make it through Kansas City.

One upside is that Elverum is directly responsible for a lot of his booking it seems, so maybe it's worth another push to play the Infoshop, which is an all-ages, community sort of place he's made it clear he prefers playing. How about after that Iowa City date?

Stereogum says "$1 from each ticket sold will benefit Air Traffic Control, 'a resource for musicians' philanthropic and social change work.'" So . . . you're going to take my dollar, put it into a fund so Jackson Browne can practice "musicians' philanthropic and social change work" by giving my dollar to another charity, but in his own name? On second thought, Omaha, they're all yours.

You know what else isn't coming to KC?

A timezone setting for my Macbook.

While this is probably better suited for White Whine, it did irk me that I have to set it to "St. Louis" time. As much as I love my Mac, I am reminded once again why I HATE Apple otherwise. Firewire good. M4a, iTunes, iPod Nanos requiring DRM-chipped headphones, hell encouraging the eventual deletion of music due to "space constraints" by introducing the iPod in the first place . . . bad.

I'm sure the fine turtle-necked folks in Cupertino are well aware that St. Louis is in an entirely different time than Kansas City - most people know this time as "the future". That's what fancy cathedrals, book-learnin', and a vibrant downtown will get you, I guess.

Pittsburgh, we feel ya (yinz?) over here on the cross-state inferiority complex tip.

Rusko . . . Thursdays through Sundays

Collectively, Kansas City says "Who?" once again while the rest of the world goes "ah yeah". Granted, the guy's been on a bit of a whiplash streak as of late but for those getting the proper bassbin treatment, it's got to be a guaranteed good time.

Just look at the tour dates - ALL DATES ARE THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY. That's how you know he's going mess shit up. That's how you know it's a party. Brilliant. For everyone else.

Mono does "the loop"

Mono does what I've been calling "the loop" for the last couple of years: A tour passes through Chicago, then Minneapolis, Detroit, Omaha, or God forbid someplace in Iowa to the north. Then head west and round it back out again along the South and Southeast.

Extra points to them though for both starting and ending the tour in Texas. It's almost like there's a huge god-forsaken wasteland in the middle of this country. I wonder if Mono has in their tour rider "Must be within 50 miles of salt water at all times".

I love me some Damon and Naomi. Sure Galaxie 500 was amazing, but these two have done so much more since then than Dean Wareham. Seriously, an album with Ghost?

Built to Spill - Not coming to Kansas City!

They were here a couple of years ago. Not this time. Omaha and St. Louis instead. That's right, thanks to Connor Oberst, Kansas City went from being St. Louis Jr to Omaha Jr. We're still Lawrence's lame-assed cousin.

By the way, does it really make sense to drive from Indianapolis to St Louis and THEN BACK EAST to Columbus? Doug Martsch, for a guy who was once in a band called Treepeople, I expected more enviro-friendliness from you.

Why not come to Kansas City?

We've got great venues, a diverse and supportive local music scene full of informed fans, and money to spend on cheap beer and records.

I'm not talking about Lawrence, not talking about Columbia, Des Moines, etc.

Kansas City.

I've been wanting to set this blog up for a long time, so here it is.

If you DO want to come to Kansas City, and are interested in playing an Infoshop for a split of the door, let me know. Or maybe I can help you set something else up.

Otherwise, from here on in, it's tours that aren't coming to Kansas City. I'm taking most of these tour dates off of other people's sites or agency sites, and I'm generally not going to be bothered with re-formatting or removing little symbols denoting who the opening band is or whatever.

Obviously, there'll be some that just aren't going to be coming here - for instance, European tours. Others are not going to be coming here and it's for the best because I think the band/act sucks and I want them to stay the hell out of town.

There will also be acts that actually ARE coming to Kansas City. Some of these acts will be well worth covering and I'll do so here (when I get around to it). Most acts coming here, however, are crap and aren't worth mentioning, so I won't.

There's going to be others, let's say like dubstep producer/dj/all-around cool guy Kode9, which just aren't obviously even going to consider coming here because this is the Wild West and admittedly, this is a city overwhelmingly comprised of musical bumpkins. But I'm still going to be pissed off about it and make a comment.

There will also be several coming to Lawrence. It's easy to do, it's a huge college town and just about everyone out there's still living off Mom and Dad back in Leawood so they've got money to burn. Lawrence gets a pass for the most part - it's only 45 minutes over there, compared to well over an hour to Columbia one-way. However, it's the 45 minutes BACK from Lawrence that make shows over there pretty much pointless to even try to attend. Anyone who's driven K-10 at 2am after a few will know why.

Oh, and lastly, I fully well know this is rarely if ever the decision of the band. Once they've gotten past a certain point (coughrelevance?) they've got managers and agents to deal with all of this crap. Let's also not forget the venue's role - or lack thereof - in all of this. No open night, not enough capacity, etc.

Enough excuses though . . . if you're a band, and you want to come here, you either book it yourself, or you throw a rockstar tantrum and make it happen. Otherwise . . . on with the (no)show.
